Profile Information

Hometown:
Pittsburgh
Relationship Status:
Single
About Me:
I have been labeled an outsider artist by a few curators and gallery owners who I have submitted my work to for review. I began drawing (and doing sculpture) in 1997 when I became disabled. I remain untrained, creating my work largely from my imagination and life experiences.
Favorite Music:
Jackson Browne; Rodney Crowell; Greg Brown; Joni Mitchell; Leonard Cohen.
Do you consider yourself an Outsider Artist? If so why? Whynot?
Yes. I consider myself an outsider in general, feeling somewhat alienated from American culture and values. I make art because I have to; it is life sustaining and gives meaning and purpose to my life that I have been unable to find in traditional jobs. I have never had formal art training nor have I engaged in much self-training (although I have tried!) and this lack of training is evident in my art.
Are you an artist, or a collector?
artist
What is your favorite type of work to collect?
I don't have enough money to collect art, although I wish I did!
What is your favorite type of work to create?
I work mostly with colored pencils, oil pencils, watercolor pencils and pens and occasionally artist markers.

I have stopped drawing (for the most part)

I am returning to paper mache and oven-baked clay, the first mediums I worked with when I suddenly turned to art in the late 1990's. My mind went dead when it came to drawing. I am not having an easy time getting back into paper mache and clay--i've forgotten much of what I learned--and neither medium is as easy as getting out a piece of paper and some pencils. But I think I am looser, freer, more creative with these mediums and I hope my creative juices start to flow again. (6/12/09)
